Athlete of the Month: Laura Dillion

“I was shocked when Suzie asked me to be athlete of the month…I actually had to make sure she was talking to me!

I have always loved sports and completion. I played volleyball and softball in high school and was on the crew team in college. I was also into running and biking and completed a few marathons and triathlons. Pretty much anything to keep me active and push myself. After college I went to a gym in Woburn with programmed group workouts. When that gym closed I went to almost every gym north of Boston trying to find a replacement. I was tired of the standard spin class or working out on my own and I missed working out in a group setting.

I had heard of Crossfit, watched the Crossfit games and was curious to try it but couldn’t get up the courage to go (I certainly do not have biceps like Briggs). I finally figured I had nothing to loose and emailed Suzie to see if I could give it a try. I remember my first day, a noon class on a Friday, and I couldn’t believe how many people were there! Not only the amount of people, but the number of people that came over to introduce themselves and just made me feel totally welcome, it seemed too good to be true. Between the people, a workout with power cleans and Brady’s wagging tail and I was hooked. I signed up that day.

Without knowing what I was getting into I signed up for the open, “its just for fun” they said. Those next few weeks I anxiously waited to see each weeks workout. I was put on the best team (shout-out to team MLB who crushed it!) and I was even doing RX for the first two weeks. And then I saw the workout with pull-ups and thought ok great I can’t even do one, this will be embarrassing. But then I surprised myself and I was able to get my very first pull up and then do thirteen more! (Who knew you could be so sore from pull-ups.)

Its only been 6 months but I can already feel how much stronger I am than when I started. I love getting to push myself everyday, but the best part is the amazing people and coaches that show up every day and cheer each other on! I definitely wouldn’t make it though half of the workouts without the support and encouragement from everyone. I can’t wait to see what the next 6 months brings and am so thankful I took the risk and walked in back in October.”
